We decided we needed to move to solar cooking as we were in a caravan in 50ºC heat - using the oven / hot plate was silly! So we did a LOT of research.
At first I wanted to build my own from one of the THOUSANDS of plans on the internet. I am very handy & used to making things from scratch. The designs varied & I could see pitfalls right away.
Before trying to source the products (which was harder than I thought) I found that most people who made their own only used them for a short period. I only red of a handful of people who used them in the long term. Even the best design, with best materials and workmanship may not give great results & have only ONE element that stopped the user using it consistently over a long period of time.
So a commercial solar cooker looked like it would work out cheaper in the long ruin and better. After doing a ton more research we narrowed it down to 3.
Two were from an Indian company and we had read reports of poor quality and lack of cooking heat and size. The other unit from the Indian company used electricity as a backup - which sounded great but in practice added to the weight and made the unit less effective in the sun. Also why would you cook outdoors if there is no sun (normally cloudy / raining)? So we decided to try the Sun Oven - the Worlds Best & Highest Selling device.
To put it mildly - the results have been amazing. We use it regularly in suburbia for bread, fruit leather, roasts, CURRIES, dahl, vegies, corn etc etc etc. It is easy to use and VERY forgiving. Even if you over-cook something it still gives great results! I can not recommend this device highly enough YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!
